Ramzi is a 29 year-old Palestinian, originally from Khan Yunis and now living in Germany. Ramzi left Palestine three years ago in search of work to help care for his family.
His journey to Germany was not safe, nor was it an easy one. The journey left him wishing he had remained in Gaza because even with the harsh living conditions, at least he had his family. Despite the dangers in leaving, Ramzi survived.
And then, October.
Just prior to the events in early October, Ramzi’s father suffered a heart attack and subsequent stroke. He was admitted to Nasser Hospital for treatment but was unable to fully recover before he was forced to flee to Rafah with the rest of the family.
Displaced several times and forced to heal in a tent, Ramzi’s father survived.
Two of Ramzi’s younger brothers have also been injured as a result of the ongoing conflict. One brother was the target of sniper fire and the other was injured while waiting to get food and water.
Despite the severity of their injuries, his brothers survived.
Ramzi told us, “my father, my mother, and my brothers have faced death every day since the seventh of October.”
“My goal was to work hard and return to Gaza to get married and build a house that would contain me, my wife, and my children.
“All this became just a dream -
الناجي (survivor)
Ramzi has no shortage of stories of survival from his departure from Palestine in 2021. While his story is his own to share, it is what inspired us to create these designs. We are all survivors of something, no matter the size of the trauma. We have our struggles, and yet we do not let them define us. We survive.
